Survey of enterprises and workers (with National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies ,GRIPS)

The project aims to construct panel data by conducting interview surveys of the same local enterprises located in Addis Ababa and its vicinity that were surveyed in the fiscal year 2018-2019. The data collected through the enterprises survey and worker survey will constitute valuable inputs for this research project, which is intended to grasp the extent to which the world-standard management and quality control practices, which is called Kaizen in Japan and other countries, are widely adopted by enterprises in Ethiopia, which is a front runner in adopting modern business management among African countries. The research project is also intended to assess how effectively Kaizen is used by local enterprises to improve business performance, work environment, job satisfaction.

A Randomised Field Experiment in Ethiopia: This project constitutes an incentivised matching experiment between firms and aspiring entrepreneurs /managers. The experiment, that is being implemented in Addis Ababa, serves three related purposes. First, it is a novel experimental design that provides for direct elicitation of both managerial skills and firms’ preferences over those skills. The experiment therefore offers a direct measure and decomposition of heterogeneity in management styles and preferences. Second, the study of the mechanism provides evidence regarding the matching of managerial skills to firms. Understanding how firms are matched with managers of different management styles.

The scope of data collection services for this evaluation includes quantitative and qualitative data collection from various areas in Ethiopia. The first phase of the commissioned work involves a community assessment and desk review on all relevant policies and statutes related to COVID-19 safety requirements as well as developing health and safety protocols for EconInsight to align with COVID-19 safety measures per the Center for Disease Control, local laws and other applicable medical guidance.The project expects to conduct approximately 240 surveys from kebele authorities and 7,200 surveys in 3,602 households in 240 kebeles in the four Highland regions of Ethiopia: Tigray, Amhara, Oromia and Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNP). Following the preliminary descriptive analysis of the survey data, qualitative research is also planned to be conducted..

ILO has contracted EconInsight to oversee and implement the quantitative component of data collection related to the impact assessment of the ‘One ILO project’ in Ethiopia. EconInsight will work in close collaboration with the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in the UK to coordinate in the impact assessment design, to implement data collection and carry out analysis. This assignment involves a two round in person and 8 round high frequency phone-based data collection using CATI to measure the labor market dynamics and economic impacts of COVID -19 pandemic. PEDL Major Research Grant : A CEPR / DFID Research Initiative ( 2020 -2023)

This is a three-year research grant award from DFID, recently named as the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) of the UK Government, to conduct research to explore as why African firms underinvest in management training. The study aims to generate experimental evidence from mid-sized and large Ethiopian firms operating in urban areas. Several interventions would be tested to explore the key constraints that prevents firms from investing in their managerial capital. The study is a joint project with the university of Stanford as well as with an academic from University of Warrick in the UK..
